Find a Midwife
There are barriers to locating nurse midwives – here are a few tips for overcoming them. Local phonebooks may list nurse midwives separately from physicians, or not at all! Call the office of a physician to ask if nurse midwives are employed. Insurance companies may not list nurse midwives as providers even though that company may reimburse nurse midwives. You may have to look under “Ancillary Services” or “Allied Health Care Providers”.
Call the labor and delivery unit of your hospitals. They are not allowed to recommend a provider, but they will probably tell you the names of practices and physicians employing nurse midwives. Also, check with health departments and family planning clinics – many nurse midwives are employed in these areas. Childbirth instructors, lactation consultants, and doulas will also know how to locate the nurse midwives.
