2010 Breastfeeding Report in the US
The Centers for Disease Control has released a report on national breastfeeding rates. While more women than ever are attempting to, the rates of those still breastfeeding at 3, 6, and 12 months are still well below the goals set by Health People 2010, and 2020. The World Health Organization and The American Academy of Pediatrics both urge breastfeeding as the main food source for babies. Yet, the less than optimal continuation rates show that women face many barriers.
The report shows that South Carolina ranks near the bottom of the US in breastfeeding rates. While just over 60% of SC mothers have attempted to breastfeed, only about 6% are still doing so at 6 months of age.
Also, while more babies than ever are born in “Baby Friendly” hospitals, the total number in the US is still only 4% of all hospital births. No hospital in South Carolina has earned the World Health Organization’s Baby Friendly Designation.

Got your attention, didn’t I? The tip for hotter sex can be found on a brand new website called Bedsider targeting 18-29 year olds. It is sleek, modern, and speaks the language of the millenium age woman. The site is all about birth control – that’s the tip for hotter sex! The site was created and maintained by The Council to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy.
Fifty percent of pregnancies are unplanned, yet 84% of women, and more than 90% of men in this age bracket claim that a baby should be planned. There is a huge disconnect between what women say about unplanned pregnancy, and what they actually do to prevent it.
This site explores birth control on multiple levels. There are the usual charts and figures. There are also video clips of women talking about birth control – what works, what side effects can happen, how to avoid gaps in coverage. Women can even sign up to receive texts to remind them take their pill every day, or change their birth control patches or vaginal rings, and attend health care appointments.
This is really an amazing website for the digital natives – those born after 1982. Check it out for yourself, and definitely recommend it to your friends.
